ジョン・エヴァレット・ミレイの《盲目の少女》は、雨上がりの野原に座る二人の少女を描いた作品です。画面には、雨雲の切れ間から現れた光と鮮やかな二重の虹、光を受けて輝く緑の草原が広がっています。

手前に座る少女は視覚障害があり、膝の上には小さなアコーディオンが置かれています。首元には「Pity the Blind（盲人に憐れみを）」と記された札が見えます。隣に寄り添う少女との近い距離感からは、二人が互いを支え合っている様子が感じられます。

興味深いのは、少女が目の前に広がる美しい風景を見ることができないということです。それでも、顔に触れる陽の光や手に触れる草、周囲の空気や音を通して、彼女もまたこの風景を感じ取っているように描かれています。

美しい自然と、少女たちが置かれた厳しい現実。その対比によって、ミレイは「見ること」と「感じること」の違い、そして人が世界を経験するさまざまな方法を静かに問いかけています。

John Everett Millais’s The Blind Girl depicts two girls resting in a field after the rain. Above them, a vivid double rainbow emerges through the clearing clouds, while sunlight illuminates the green meadow.

The girl seated in the foreground is blind. A small accordion rests on her lap, and around her neck hangs a sign bearing the words “Pity the Blind.” The younger girl beside her leans closely against her, suggesting a quiet sense of companionship and mutual dependence.

What makes the scene particularly poignant is that the girl cannot see the beautiful landscape before her. Yet she appears to experience the world through other senses—the warmth of sunlight on her face, the grass beneath her hands, and the sounds and atmosphere surrounding her.

By placing the beauty of nature alongside the girls’ difficult circumstances, Millais creates a work that goes beyond a simple depiction of blindness or poverty. The painting quietly invites us to consider the difference between seeing and feeling, and the many ways in which we experience the world.
